SPORTS COMPLEX History

The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Sports Complex in Ile-Ife, Nigeria, is an integral part of the university’s commitment to promoting physical education and sports development. The sports complex has a rich history tied to the university’s overall educational philosophy, which encourages the holistic development of students—physically, mentally, and intellectually.

 

History and Development:

  • Establishment: The sports complex was established in the early years of the university, which was founded in 1961 as the University of Ife (later renamed Obafemi Awolowo University in 1987). It was developed to serve as a center for sporting activities, allowing students to participate in various sports while pursuing their academic studies.

    –  A standard football pitch (for both training and competition).
    A track and field stadium for athletics.
    – Indoor courts for basketball, volleyball, and handball.
    Tennis courts, badminton facilities, and a swimming pool.

    The sports complex has hosted numerous university-wide, regional, and national sporting events. It has been a training ground for many athletes who have gone on to represent Nigeria at national and international levels.
