Taekwondo has been an important part of the martial arts culture at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), contributing to the university’s sports development through both competitive success and personal discipline training. The sport has a long history at the university, dating back to the 1980s, and has continued to grow in popularity as a form of self-defense, physical fitness, and competitive sport.
Taekwondo was introduced to OAU in the early 1980s as part of the university’s commitment to offering a wide variety of sports and fitness activities. Initially, it attracted students interested in martial arts, self-defense, and those seeking to improve their physical fitness.
Early Enthusiasts: The early practitioners of Taekwondo at OAU were primarily students who had learned the basics of martial arts before coming to the university. Some were members of local Taekwondo clubs or had trained in other forms of martial arts like karate or judo. These students played a crucial role in popularizing the sport on campus by forming small practice groups.
University Support: Recognizing the growing interest in Taekwondo, the university’s sports council officially added the sport to its list of extracurricular activities in the mid-1980s. This helped formalize training sessions, leading to the creation of the OAU Taekwondo Club.
The OAU Taekwondo Club was established as an official student organization in the late 1980s, offering structured training sessions and providing a platform for students to learn the sport more formally.
Training and Skill Development: The club brought in professional coaches and experienced practitioners from outside the university to train students. These coaches helped students develop foundational techniques, such as kicking, striking, blocking, and self-defense strategies. As the club grew, it became known for its disciplined approach, emphasizing both physical and mental development.
Belt Ranking System: OAU Taekwondo followed the traditional belt ranking system, starting with white belts for beginners and progressing through yellow, green, blue, red, and eventually black belts. Students worked their way up the ranks through rigorous training, periodic assessments, and grading sessions conducted by certified Taekwondo masters.
As Taekwondo became more established at OAU, the university’s team began to participate in local, regional, and national competitions, earning a reputation for excellence.
Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA): The OAU Taekwondo team has been a regular participant in the Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA), where they have competed in various weight categories and both male and female divisions. The team has won multiple medals in NUGA competitions, cementing its status as one of the top university Taekwondo teams in Nigeria.
Intercollegiate Competitions: In addition to NUGA, the OAU Taekwondo team has competed in several intercollegiate martial arts tournaments, often securing top positions in various categories, including individual sparring and team-based events. These competitions have provided valuable experience for students and helped raise the profile of Taekwondo at OAU.
International Exposure: Some of OAU’s most skilled Taekwondo athletes have gone on to represent Nigeria in international competitions. This exposure has contributed to the growth of the sport at OAU and inspired younger students to take up Taekwondo.
Self-Defense and Fitness: Taekwondo at OAU has played a significant role in promoting personal safety and fitness among students. The sport’s focus on self-defense techniques has made it particularly popular among female students, who view it as a valuable skill for personal protection.
Mental Discipline: Beyond the physical benefits, Taekwondo is known for instilling discipline, focus, and mental resilience. Students who participate in Taekwondo often cite improvements in their concentration, stress management, and ability to maintain calm under pressure—qualities that are valuable both in academic settings and beyond.
Inclusive Participation: Taekwondo at OAU is open to all students, regardless of their previous experience or fitness level. The OAU Taekwondo Club offers beginner-friendly training sessions alongside advanced practice for more experienced members, creating an inclusive environment where anyone can learn and progress.
Limited Resources: One of the challenges faced by the OAU Taekwondo team has been the limited availability of resources, including training equipment, protective gear, and adequate space for practice. Despite these limitations, the team has continued to perform well in competitions due to the dedication of its members and the support of the university.
Sustaining Interest: While Taekwondo has a dedicated following at OAU, maintaining high levels of participation has sometimes been a challenge. The club regularly organizes exhibitions, demonstrations, and beginner workshops to attract new members and sustain interest in the sport.
Renewed Focus on Competitions: In recent years, the OAU Taekwondo team has placed a renewed emphasis on competitive success. The university’s sports council has increased its support for the team by providing better facilities and sponsoring participation in more national and international tournaments.
Taekwondo as a Wellness Activity: As part of OAU’s broader efforts to promote student wellness, Taekwondo is now seen not only as a competitive sport but also as a means of enhancing mental and physical health. The club has incorporated wellness practices such as meditation, flexibility training, and stress relief exercises into its training sessions.
Taekwondo at Obafemi Awolowo University has grown from a small group of enthusiasts to a well-organized and successful sport that has left a lasting impact on student life. Through the formation of the OAU Taekwondo Club, participation in NUGA and other competitions, and a strong focus on discipline and self-defense, Taekwondo has become one of the university’s most respected sports. Despite challenges such as limited resources, the dedication of students and coaches continues to ensure that Taekwondo thrives at OAU, offering a blend of competition, personal development, and fitness opportunities for all.
